Diagnosed in 2001, I have been legally blind for 17 years, without the ability to drive. I have two young boys, ages 11 and 8 and as this is a genetic disease, they are automatically carriers of the gene. They are at risk of developing this disease themselves, and so it is very important to me to advocate for finding a cure and/or preventions for Stargardts.
In 2012, my retinal specialist brought to my attention the WNY Visionwalk. The WNY Visionwalk is a 5K event that raises money and awareness around WNY of the Foundation Fighting Blindness, a nonprofit national organization that drives research for preventions and treatments of rare retinal degenerative diseases such as Stargardts, Usher Syndrome, Macular degeneration, and retinitis pigmentosa. This event was held at Delaware Park and is a free, family-friendly walk, with food, drinks, kids' activities, etc. My family and friends then helped me to form a team "What’s Insight for Sarah?" and we went on to raise $2200 our first year!
In 2013, I was then approached by the FFB to be the WNY Visionwalk Chairperson and gladly accepted and was honored to fill this role. Our team went on to raise over $8000 that year! In 2014, as my 3rd year chairing the event, my team raised over $13000! In the past five years, we have rasied over $30,000 as a team for the FFB!
Over the past 5 years, WNY as a community has raised over $300,000 for the FFB and retinal research! Truly amazing and so proud!
Our goal for the walk this year as a whole is $46,000 and our team, What's Insight for Sarah?" has a goal of $1000!
I am very excited about our accomplishments and very grateful to all of my family and friends and walk committee for their support!
